Wood Profiles

A lesson on mouldings

Wood Profiles

The mouldings pictured are the basic profiles of the framing industry. Profiles maybe wider, taller, have a deeper rabbet. They may be decorated with various finishes and embellishments. The quality of wood used in the finishing methods may vary with each manufacturer.

There are trends in the framing industry just as in decorating and clothing. The companies that design mouldings take into consideration the colours, furniture, and types of art that are popular and make mouldings to suit. Mouldings may be discontinued when they go out of style, although many "classics" remained available for many years.

Four Pencil Stubs

Derwent Pastel Pencils Worked to Death

Derwent Pastel Pencils and a drawing

A man accompanied by his wife visited Swinton's one day. Being around 80 years of age, this was a special outing. They went out only when it was absolutely necessary.

"I work them to a stub" he said, displaying in his hand four tiny remains of what used to be pencils.

Drawing is a sacred act, an ancient activity, a language onto itself. There is hardly a human being that hasn't done it. If you doodle, you draw. Some however, take this simple act to another level...

Painting Secret #43 • The Power of Green

Simplify your palette by mixing your greens.

Overgrown

A lot of artists have trouble with green because there are so many shades to mix and so many types to buy. What I've come to understand about green is that less is more. Simplify.

Removing most of the greens off of my palette made a positive difference to my paintings. If you want harmonious greens you have to mix them. I now carry only one green, Viridian, a green with subtle blue undertones that also makes nice turquoise colours.

I took a Copic from Swinton's

It was an accident, but I keep forgetting to take it back. It's almost like I did it on purpose. Recently, I even found myself using it. I think I'll take it back, maybe, one day, soon... But first - let me try it out on this Yupo Paper. ohhhh Nice! Smoooth.

Framing Ideas

Expert thoughts on framing

Framing Ideas

A good frame completes a painting. In my studio I keep on hand many sizes of tester frames. Some didn’t start out as a tester frame but with handling and show dings they became that way. For testing, even an old ugly frame is better than no frame at all. Usually at about the 3/4 mark of a painting I will try it out in a frame to get a fresh perspective and often find I'm farther along than I thought. This helps me avoid overworking a piece.  Let's see what other tips the experts have…
