Derwent XL Drawing Charcoal Blocks
Charcoal just got bigger and more beautiful! These blocks have all the qualities of charcoal that you love, in a chunky XL form, combine that with rich natural colours and what have you got? – An artist’s dream!
The blocks come in 6 muted shades from Sanguine and Violet to Sepia and Ochre. Naturally water-soluble you can use them on a damp surface and release lots of colour really quickly and build up layers of different colours as you go.
Derwent XL Drawing Charcoal Review.

These giant chunks of charcoal are super soft and wonderful to work with. The soft nature reacts more like a pastel than a charcoal. At first their bulky nature seemed a little daunting but their velvety smooth consistency proves otherwise. Excellent smudge factor! The buttery nature lets you soften your marks letting you control your edges from hard to delicate, perfect for studio lighting situations. The big chunky size allow for some fantastic larger bold mark making that things like conte’ and nu-pastel don’t allow. They may be really soft but you can still get a sharp edge if you need one. They are on the pricey side but they will last for what seems like an eternity due to their bulky size. The other really cool thing is that they are water-soluble. My only negative comment would be that there is a limited palette of colours. I would love to see some earth reds.
I used the Strathmore toned tan paper for these drawings, which is a pretty smooth paper and these drawing sticks gripped on to the paper with minimum effort and still had good erasability. And the way I draw erasability is oober important…. Here are a few drawings I’ve done using the Derwint XL Charcoal Sticks.
