Applied Colour Mixing {Extended}

Workshop for oil, acrylic and watercolour artists.

Mixing the Right Colour- Weekend Warrior Edition

3-day Workshop by Holly McWilliams

  • Mon. July 3, 10am-4pm
  • Tue. July 4, 6-9pm
  • Wed. July 5, 6-9pm

$230

Essential workshop for artists tired of mixing huge vats of the wrong colour and spending most of their time mixing sludge on the palette instead of putting fresh colour on to the canvas.

Applied colour mixing to the rescue! Armed with a palette knife and tubes of paint, you will learn the defences passed down from ancient, battling, masters of art. Start painting from the offence, not the trenches filled with mud.

There is a method to the madness of colour mixing, join Holly for this 12 hour workshop that will break down the double primary system, warm and cool colours, complementary colours and transitions.

Open to oil, acrylic and watercolour artists.

  • 14x18 canvas or board
  • 12x16 canvas or board
  • Paint knife
  • Paper towel - blue shop towel is the best!

Paint: It’s very important that you have these specific colors for the class

  • Cadmium Yellow medium or dark
  • Lemon yellow (hansa will work as well, you want the yellow that looks most like a lemon peel)
  • Cadmium Red medium
  • Quinacradone rose
  • Ultramarine blue
  • Manganese blue (cerulean or pthalo blue can work)
  • Transparent red oxide or Burnt Sienna

Extra's that are handy to have but not necessary for this course:

  • Yellow ochre
  • Cadmium orange
  • Manganese violet or dioxanine purple

Mediums and turps:

  • "Eco House" for oil - No hardware store turps please! They are very toxic and tend to give people bad headaches, even if they say no odour.
  • Acrylic - Gloss medium and varnish and or a retarder

Brushes: please bring the brushes you already have. These brushes are suggestions

  • Oil - hogs hair brushes.
  • Acrylic - synthetic brushes
  • Flat brushes Size #2, 4, 8, 10
